Recently, though, a slew of personality tests have hit the internet to determine whether or not surfers are at risk of mental illness. These consist of bi polar tests meant to analyze the symptoms of bipolar disorder, general mental illness tests, which can detect signs of bipolar or schizophrenic illnesses, etcetera. If you don’t take these quizzes too seriously, they’re fine. In fact, a well written bipolar quiz can actually help you to determine whether or not you should consider talking to a psychiatrist. However, an internet quiz cannot give you a proper, accurate diagnosis when it comes to something as serious as mental illness. That isn’t to say that an online bipolar test cannot help you get started. An online bipolar test, if nothing else, can let you know that you do fit a few of the criteria of a mental illness, but that is all. A thorough, professional evaluation of your mental stability will involve comprehensive in depth interviews with a trained professional. Quite often, further interviews will be conducted with your friends and family. Mental exercises and experiments will be conducted. In short, there is just too much that you need to look at to determine whether or not you are bipolar, or schizophrenic, or anything else, and it’s not something a website can do.Misdiagnosis can lead to serious complications. In many cases, a person who suffers absolute no mental illness may actually develop depressive or manic episodes as a result of improperly administered medication or psychiatric treatment. Even if psychiatric medication does not result in any mental or mood changes, psychiatric medication can have serious side effects including hair loss, weight gain, dizziness, confusion, nausea, and so on. Without first talking to a doctor about whether or not you would be sensitive to such side effects, your only choice is to experiment on yourself. If you feel you are at risk, talk to your friends, talk to your family, and talk to an experienced psychiatrist. An online bipolar test can’t necessarily hurt, but the help it offers is anything but conclusive. Psychiatry AnxietyIf you have a sort of distrust of the psychiatric profession, don’t be ashamed, that’s actually a fairly common phobia. We’ve all seen those movies where the evil psychiatrist administers unnecessary medication and treatment for his own kicks. However, that stuff is purely science fiction, and it has absolutely no bearing on the field of modern psychiatric care. Most people who suffer from bipolar disorders live productive lives with the aid of medication or treatment, all thanks to a diagnosis from a qualified psychiatrist. A qualified psychiatric professional is someone who will get you the help you need, and only if you need it. Going to a psychiatrist does not mean that you necessarily have a problem. Seeing a psychiatrist means that you are learning whether or not you have a problem, and if you do, you’ll find out what you can do, voluntarily, to help remedy that problem. Am I Crazy? Some people who may or may not suffer from bipolar disorder harbor a fear that, once the psychiatrist learns of the morbid imagery you conjure up when you’re depressed or frustrated, they’ll lock you up and throw away the key.Everybody has morbid thoughts now and then. Everybody has been cut off in traffic and briefly daydreamed about blowing that guy’s car up with a bazooka, or any number of far out things we would never do in real life. When little kids are angry at their parents, they might follow that anger impulse and draw a picture of mom and dad being eaten by sharks or something silly like that. Thoughts inspired by anger, sadness or frustration do not necessarily make you bipolar or “crazy” or anything like that. Those are feelings that everyone has, and there’s no reason not to share them with a psychiatrist. |
